About my work
By painting and drawing the human figure, I’m bringing a body to its essence, for instance through the compact image of a torso. The skin is essential too – Its tone, shades and muscle tension fascinate me as they become an abstract work when looked upon closely.
My portraits have a haziness about them, leaving them open to suggestion and the need for one’s own construction. As I usually paint my non commissioned work from images of people that don’t exist (from thispersondoesnotexist.com), they encourage me to make up a story around them, giving these pictured faces characters, emotions, a history. But they always remain non existent and obscure.
During my time in London I started painting as an outlet next to my corporate jobs. I trained by attending life drawing classes and did several courses at London’s art schools. Back in The Netherlands I kept on painting and started drawing cartoons. My focus is on the human figure and portraits. With a background in anthropology and psychology, human beings have always been a source of fascination to me.
